A Mayan Heritage in Weaving and Embroidery

Nilsa Judelina Teni Gué, a young Maya Queqchí woman, is the proud torchbearer of her community’s rich textile and embroidery traditions in Samac, Cobán Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. At the heart of Nilsa’s artistry lies the ancient technique of pikbil weaving. Using a traditional waist loom and a blend of cotton threads, Nilsa weaves intricate patterns known as “kaxkem” or “tzo ́t,” that reflect the vibrant colors and symbols of the Queqchí culture.

In addition to her mastery of pikbil weaving, Nilsa is also an accomplished embroiderer, specializing in designs known as “Bordados Caracoles” or “Cobán embroidery.” Drawing on techniques passed down by her foremothers, Nilsa meticulously stitches each motif by hand. Through her art, Nilsa honors the traditions of her ancestors while embracing innovation and creativity.

Volunteering her time and expertise at the Ixbalamke cooperative, she shares her knowledge with fellow artisans, empowering them to perpetuate their craft for future generations. Nilsa strives to ensure that the art of pikbil weaving and Cobán embroidery continues to thrive, serving as a source of pride for her community and beyond.
