Metal Work
Zokir Kamalov represents the fifth generation in a family of blacksmiths. In the tradition of work handed down from father to son (his father is Sharif Kamalov), the younger Kamalov has brought his nephew, Mirza Kahmraev, into the fold as a partner.
Mizra first worked with Zokir as his apprentice. The two work together producing the special scissors used in the gold embroidery for which Bukhara is noted.
In addition, they are known for their production of knives, sabers and other specialized blades. Both do hot and cold forging in their work, not only fashioning tools for their own work, but also making decorative items in silver, copper, brass, bronze as well as bone, ram’s horn, deer antlers - augmented with semi-precious stones.
The blacksmith’s trade dates back to about the twelfth century. Most towns had a blacksmith to produce the metal tools and objects needed for everyday household use.
In modern-day Uzbekistan, smiths still make traditional tools for farmers and tradesmen. They still enjoy a special place in the hearts of villagers. Kamalov explains his place very succinctly: “We are proud of our trade and value the respect our fathers gained…”
