Xolile Thembeka Hazel Ndlovu
South Africa
Year(s) attended: 2010
Embroidery
Xolile was first introduced to embroidery during the 2004 Ntokozo development project at the African Art Centre in Durban. There seven women, all single mothers living in KwaZulu-Natal, were taught to make appliqué and stitchery panels as well as cushion covers, some embellished with beads.
Xolile’s narrative embroideries provide commentary on changing Zulu customs and mores in contemporary life. Each embroidery is accompanied by a short paragraph that explains its meaning.
