Tribal Textiles

The tribal communities of India make up eight percent, approximately eighty million, of the country’s total population. Scattered across the country, these communities rely heavily on their crafts to generate a significant portion of their income. They also devote most of their time working as artisans. The tribal textiles brought to the Market this year by Ramesh Lal, a tribal member, exemplify a wide and exciting range of styles and techniques, reflecting the diversity of the tribes, including geographical differences. The textiles include shawls from northeastern India, Eri Silk shawls, woven wool shawls from Himachal Pradesh including Pashmina, Dongaria Kondh shawls from Orissa State, and tussar silk shawls from Jharkhand.
