Polychrome Clay Sculpture
The style of “barro policromato” (polychrome ceramic) that is made in Izucar de Matamoros, Puebla, is unique in Mexico. Delicate clay forms, both figurative and functional are generously adorned with small figures and painted in bright colors with elaborate cross-hatching and swirls. Though now used mostly for decorative purposes, the folk art derives from a tradition of painted ceramics that is centuries old. The Castillo family is one of two in Izucar de Matamoros that has continued, preserved and developed this form. Each family member specializes in particular forms, ranging from the highly traditional tree of life to whimsical and fantastic figures.
