Hardanga
The delicate work of counting and drawing threads called hardanga, that once decorated clothing and household items in Jamaica, was in danger of becoming extinct. A very elderly woman trained five other women in this nearly lost art; they in turn trained another 43 women, and now many women are skilled in hardanga, including Norma Nugent. Now, not only is this art form an important source of income, but it also brings a sense of pride and accomplishment to her and her community in the cool hills of Richmond, St. Mary, Jamaica.
