Recycled Steel Sculpture
The blacksmiths of Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, first shaped cast-off steel drums into crosses for the local cemeteries. Michée Ramil Remy is part of a new generation of metal sculpture artists following in the footstep of such recognized artists such as Serge Jolimeau (a Market Artist for several years) and George Bien-Aime, Michée’s stepfather. These established artists have trained many young men in this folk art form that has become internationally recognized and brings important income into the community. The imagery in the artists’ work pays tribute to, and respects, Haiti’s rich cultural heritage and religious beliefs.
