Jabulile Nala
South Africa
Year(s) attended: 2010, 2011
Ceramic
Descending from a famous line of potters, Jabulile was taught by her mother, renowned potter Nesta Nala, and her grandmother Simphiwe.
Zulu beer pots, a customary part of Zulu weddings, births, marriages and burials, symbolize hospitality and communality.
In the traditional manner, Jabulile hand-digs clay near her home, and coils, burnishes, fires, and rubs her pots with animal fat.
Her family is also known for infusing their work with a contemporary spirit, creating larger and more elaborate forms, for which Jabulile is becoming nationally and internationally known.
