Ikat and Velvet Ikat Weaving

Fazlitdin learned the skills of ikat weaving from his father and grandfather. He also trained at the College of Textile Production in Uzbekistan.

Ikat textiles contributed most to the fame of Bukhara. The fabric was worn by the wealthy throughout Central Asia. Traditionally a male activity, the craft was known to only a few groups of male specialists. The secrets of the techniques and designs were handed down from master to apprentice, and were carefully guarded by each workshop.

Fazlitdin specializes in reviving ancient techniques of velvet ikat using natural dyes and designs that are highly prized by collectors and designers. Fazlitdin’s skilled revival of Central Asian ikat is ensuring the continuity of its traditional methods. In 2005, Fazlitdin Dadajanov received the UNESCO Award of Excellence.
