Hand Block Printing (Ajarakh)

Abdul Razak Mohmed Khatri is a ninth generation block printer, taught by his father, from Gujarat state. The tradition is at least four centuries old in the Khatri community. The silk and cotton grounds are meticulously printed with wood blocks using natural dyes, with the entire process taking about fifteen days. Such textiles, traditionally used by sheepherders, are now worn as saris, dupattas (veils) and stoles. Abdul has conducted a number of design workshops for the “National Institute of Design” from 2001 – 2004, and is breathing new life into this ancient craft.
