Kente Woven Cotton Textiles and Garments

Thompson Yao Avornyotse

Work by Thompson Yao Avornyotse

Thompson designs the regal and gorgeous Kente weavings which are a strong part of national identity in his home country of Ghana. These colorful geometric designs show intricate horizontal and vertical patterns and are the reason Kente cloth is among the best known and most widely recognized of all African textiles. Kente is made using a narrow treadle loom and the entire loom apparatus has symbolic meanings and is accorded a great deal of respect. The quality of the yarns reflects the level of prestige associated with the cloth. Silk yarns are the most prestigious.  Some Kente are used for ceremonial rites of passage such as vidzikpe (rite after women’s first childbirth) and veworewor (twins initiation).

Kente cloth is regarded as a symbol of pride and dignity, and when worn its beauty affects the way the people carry themselves as proud Ghanaians. This folk art is mostly done by men and is passed on by serving an apprenticeship to a master artist for two to three years. Thompson is considered one of the best weavers and designers and was instrumental in forming the Kpetoe Weavers Association which has over 130 handloom textile weavers.

The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, a non-profit organization, produces the largest international folk art market in the world, and our success led to Santa Fe’s designation as a UNESCO City of Folk Art.
