Ikat-Dyed, Woven Rebozos

A textile mecca in the State of Mexico, Tenancingo is famed throughout the country for its backstrap-loom woven cotton shawls figured with intricate vegetal-dyed designs. The threads that eventually are woven into the shawl are first meticulously tied off in bunches of knots to resist the dye, then, once untied, carefully warped onto loom for weaving. Only then does the separate, and also technically challenging process of making the fringe begins. Fewer and fewer artisans each year choose to practice this arduous craft.
