Work by Nani Norchayati Lestari

Nani grew up in a family of farmers and batik makers, learning all aspects of the art form from her grandmother and mother. UNESCO has designated batik as part of world cultural heritage.

Nani now is part of a cooperative of 50 women that teaches members about organizational management and such business practices as fair trade. Following the earthquake in Java in 2006, the coop received governmental support to add more members to the cooperative.

The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, a non-profit organization, produces the largest international folk art market in the world, and our success led to Santa Fe’s designation as a UNESCO City of Folk Art.
