“Pual Kambu,” the technique of weaving passed on by Iban women, determines a woman’s social status in her community. Weavers are regarded by community members not only as artists, but also as chemists, historians, and poets.

The weavers tie patterns onto the warp threads using a fiber called “lemba,” weave on a back strap loom, and dye the materials with natural roots, bark and leaves.

No pre-made patterns are used, as the weavers are said to be inspired in their dreams by the Weaving Goddess “Kumang.” When each textile is complete, a poetic title is recited to add to its beauty and complexity.

Nancy Anak Ngali learned this art at age 8 and has been weaving for over 45 years. She hopes to pass it on to her granddaughters as soon as they are old enough.
