The La Yurata community is a small group of about 45 extended Huichol families who occupy approximately five acres seven miles outside of Tepic in Nayarit, Mexico. Like many Huicholes, they have been displaced by contemporary society from their ancestral lands and struggle to maintain their autonomy and traditional lifeways.

Modesto is a master artist whose tradition of yarn painting expresses Huichol spiritual beliefs. The paintings are used as ceremonial offerings at sacred sites.

The La Yurata community also produces traditional beadwork and embroidered shoulder bags.

The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, a non-profit organization, produces the largest international folk art market in the world, and our success led to Santa Fe’s designation as a UNESCO City of Folk Art.
