Miniature Painting on Lacquered Boxes

Impossibly ornate and complex, the lacquer drawings of Kamoliddin Shamansurov adorn papier-mâché boxes that fit easily in one hand. With intensive floral patterns, elegant symmetry and caravan scenes, Kamoliddin brings forward traditions that began in the 15th century. The rich golds, deep blues, vibrant reds reflect his patience, technical skill and knowledge of artistic traditions.

After learning from his father and grandfather, Kamoliddin attended a special art school when he was 12 years old to learn the craft. Now, he is a teacher in Tashkent and has students who follow his path. “I represent big, old traditions in a little box,” he says. “I can’t imagine my life without art.” His art is used in the home, often for jewelry boxes that are purchased as gifts.

The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, a non-profit organization, produces the largest international folk art market in the world, and our success led to Santa Fe’s designation as a UNESCO City of Folk Art.
