Work by Kakuben Babubhai Ahir

Like many women in the Northern Indian region of Gujarat, Kakuben Babubhai Ahir began learning the elaborate embroidery traditions of her local community from her mother at a very young age. But she never thought that these skills could provide her with a livelihood until a period of extreme economic hardship forced her and her family to leave their homes, migrating constantly in search of work. Eventually she was connected with SEWA Trade Facilitation Center, which helped her provide a home and a living for her family, an education for her children, and a promising future for the traditional craft to which she is so devoted.

The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, a non-profit organization, produces the largest international folk art market in the world, and our success led to Santa Fe’s designation as a UNESCO City of Folk Art.
