Woven Textiles

As the youngest of master weaver Isaac Vásquez Garcia’s children, Isaac uniquely showed a particular talent for drawing, for which he was recognized while in primary school. Torn between becoming a painter or a weaver, he chose the latter, following in his father’s footsteps.
Although he works in cooperation with his father, he designs many of his own naturally dyed, hand woven rugs and wall hangings. Some of the pieces use traditional Zapotec motifs, but he now also uses indigenous design elements that he finds in old codices, petroglyphs, Aztec and Mayan archaeological sites. Seven of his pieces were collected by the Mingei International Museum of San Diego.
