Embroideries and Weavings

Irma Martínez Pascual is a master artisan from San Felipe Santiago, a Mazahua community in the state of Mexico. Like her mother and grandmother before her, Irma embroiders miniature floral, geometric and mythic designs on the hand-dyed textiles for which her community is well-known. The town has a long handicraft tradition of fine embroidery products, including table runners, bedspreads and napkins. Mazahuas rank as the poorest indigenous group in the state of Mexico. Irma’s artistry reaped the benefits of her close association with famed Mexican folk art scholar and museum founder, Maria Teresa Pomar, who mentored her in her craft. Today, Irma’s textiles are sold throughout the world and displayed in the world-famous folk art museum that bears Teresa Pomar’s name.

The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, a non-profit organization, produces the largest international folk art market in the world, and our success led to Santa Fe’s designation as a UNESCO City of Folk Art.
