Tuareg Leather Work

Haoua Albaka

Work by Houa Albaka

Haoua comes from a family of traditional Niger craftsmen. She started learning leather craft at a young age from her mother. Traditional leather products from the region are made of goat leather dyed with natural dyes, with cut out designs and long fringe that is sometimes braided to make tassels. These distinctive items continue to be used in the everyday life of the Tuareg people and are unique to their culture.

The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, a non-profit organization, produces the largest international folk art market in the world, and our success led to Santa Fe’s designation as a UNESCO City of Folk Art.
