Now an artist and teacher of traditional mud cloth dyeing techniques, Boubacar Doumbia learned the artistic styles of Bogolan and Gala from his family and community when he was a young boy.

Boubacar later earned a degree in the traditional arts of mud cloth dyeing and now teaches at an international art school in Mali.

The fabric-dyeing techniques are traditionally from Ségou- Mali and utilize both mud and leaves to make the natural red, brown, blue and ochre colored dyes. Clothes made from the cloth are traditionally worn by Bambar natives both casually and ceremonially.

The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, a non-profit organization, produces the largest international folk art market in the world, and our success led to Santa Fe’s designation as a UNESCO City of Folk Art.
