Yoruba Aluminum Relief Panels

Although still a young man, Adebayo Taofeek Folorunsho already approaches his blacksmithing art with the skill, refinement and talent of a veritable master. He uses a repoussé method to create intricate scenes on hand-forged aluminum panels, following a process of ornamenting aluminum surfaces with designs in relief by hammering out from the back. Adebayo was born into a family of artisans who use blacksmithing tools, such as the chisel, hammer, knife, punches and coals, for forging and hammering the relief panels. This art was traditionally hung on palace walls and, today, is used to decorate the doors, entrance gates and dining rooms of village houses. Through his expertly crafted panels, the local stories of Yoruba culture are brought to life, including images of local festivals, favorite biblical stories such as Adam and Eve, and elaborate story scenes depicting figures such as the regal peacock and the wicked snake from the animal kingdom.

The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, a non-profit organization, produces the largest international folk art market in the world, and our success led to Santa Fe’s designation as a UNESCO City of Folk Art.
