Work by Abel Barragan

Abel, a well established Oaxacan orfebre (silversmith), discovered his talent for creating jewelry at age 11. By age 20 he had joined one of the most well known Oaxacan workshops, Plata Mexicana; by 30 he had opened his own workshop with the help of his family. It is here that he is passing on his skills and knowledge of this intricate traditional Mexican jewelry – made of silver filigree with coral, pearl, shell or turquoise – to his daughter, Nancy, and son, Isaias.

The Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, a non-profit organization, produces the largest international folk art market in the world, and our success led to Santa Fe’s designation as a UNESCO City of Folk Art.
